LifeNews Comment

An (Edited) Comment from LifeNews:

The pro-life community lost two dear friends this week. On one hand we lost a tender woman who couldn't stand up for her own right to live. On the other, we lost a world leader who stood up for those would couldn't speak for themselves.

The deaths of Pope John Paul II and Terri Schiavo remind us of where we've been and where we're going. When Roe v. Wade legalized unlimited abortion, we told the world that there would be consequences.

We said there would be a slippery slope that would lead from the death of an "unwanted" unborn child to the death of other people considered less desirable by society -- the elderly, the sick, and the disabled.

And here we are.

We now live in a society that allows a husband to starve his wife for thirteen days, deprive her of appropriate medical care and rehabilitative treatment, forsake his relationship with her and have children with a live-in girlfriend, melt down his wife's wedding ring, kill her cats, emotionally torture her parents and family and claim he's keeping her best interests in mind.

Moreover, we live in a society where six different courts look the other way and uphold the euthanasia as "what she would have wanted." The mainstream media certainly won't report the truth about this devaluing of human life. In fact, not only will the mainstream media overlook the degradation of human life via abortion and euthanasia, they say we're at fault and our actions to protect life are wrongheaded.

In its obituary news story on Terri Schiavo's death, Knight Ridder news service wrote, "For all the tragedies in Terri's life, perhaps one of the blessings was that she was unaware of the furor that she'd caused."

So it's Terri's fault that she was such a burden on society she caused an international uproar. How about this quote from the Miami Herald?

"The politicians who dove into the storm over Terri Schiavo's fate failed to prolong her life, but their incendiary efforts may cause reverberations at the polls."

Incendiary efforts? Remember that the next time you vote for a pro-life candidate, send a donation to a pro-life group, volunteer your time, participate in an event, or speak out about pro-life issues.

Your efforts are "incendiary" because they go against the media's notion that anything that protects and values life must somehow be politically calculated and controversial.

Your efforts must be self-seeking as you desire to "prolong life" by providing medical care to severely disabled newborns instead of euthanizing them, or pain relief to an elderly patient instead of calling Dr. Kevorkian.

The media consistently takes the view of groups that favour assisted suicide and euthanasia who claim people that burden our society don't need to be kept around.

How dare Terri Schiavo have the will to live 15 years after she became incapacitated. She's just a vegetable with no life worth living. She's on the public dole causing Florida taxpayers thousands of dollars to provide her with hospice care.

Read any mainstream media news story on Terri Schiavo and that's the message you get. The battle to protect the lives of friends like Terri Schiavo is not over. The pro-life movement will continue to defend the Terri Schiavos of the world and LifeNews.com will be there, too, to keep you informed.
